Evaluation

I Believe that this Project Was Still successful And that it meets the Core requirements of the brief Despite its major set backs as I did not get to Create all of the things I had proposed but The work I did Create I believe was Of Distinction quality and I am happy with the results I produced due to the circumstances. the Aim of the Project was to use all the skills that you have developed over the year to produce an individual response that demonstrates this learning effectively by taking responsibility for their own learning by demonstrating their achievement in proposing and realising a project which integrates contextual perspective, research, problem solving, planning and organization, evaluation and reflection, and practical, technical and presentational skills. I Believe I have achieved these criteria To a high level. Apart from the “realising a project” due to the unexpected time delays I faced I did not get to fully realise the project I had proposed.

From the Brief out line In my introduction/initial research stage I planed incorporate All the Skills I have Learned though out the course, First and Second year to be culminated Demonstration of all my abilities I have Learned so far. this included 3D modeling Mainly Developed in the first Years Unit 6 and through out all the other Units I will demonstrate this by Creating efficient Geometry appropriate to the needs of my project and creating Correct Topology on my Characters so they when they are rigged and skinned they will have proper deformations when they are animated. texturing this was  Lightly touched on in unit 6 and 7 then this was optional on all the other units so I don’t have as much experience as I would like but I plan to Demonstrate this skill By UVW unwrapping all of my objects in my scene and Creating my own textures for Them. Creating normal maps, Developed in Unit 12 I will demonstrate this by Creating normal maps for my assets within my scene. Rigging & Skinning Developed in unit 10 I will Demonstrate this by Creating Rigged and Skinned characters complete with controllers to be used in Animations. Research and Development skills that have been developed through out all the units over the course I will Demonstrate this by Creating various Mind maps, Mood boards, Visual Analysis, Contextual Research, Experimentation, Watching Tutorials, Screen shots of my work in progress, Story boards, Problem solving. Evaluation skills Developed thought out the course I will Demonstrate this by critically Reflecting on all aspects of the Research, development Stages and assessing at multiple stages if I am working as efficiently as possible if what im working on is Relevent and will meet the criteria of the brief using this reflective stage to make any adjustments to ensure my project on track and is as successful as possible.

for the most part I believe I Achieved this par some Aspects like Texturing I did Initial plan to UvwUnwrap and texture all my objects in my scene my self but due to the time constraints I wasnt able to do this but I did do some Development into texturing. using some new Techniques I had identified from my Research, the technique where to place UV’s onto of each other to save texture space I think that the Uvw Maps that I did create were okay they do employ the new technique that I learned but They don’t Fully utilise the Full Texture space available as I had hand packed the UVW’s and the reason behind this is that when I was researching texturing I found that it’s a good idea to keep the texture space of the UV in proportion of how the actual model is and that was my motivation and reason behind why the UVW Unwraps don’t use the entire texture space effectively. Another Aspect that I dint get to demonstrate is the Creation of Normals maps and this is mainly due to the time constraints. there was few opportunity for me to fully utilize and justify the use of a normal map I would have used them in the environment and I also would have probably like to have sculpted the wrinkles on the samurai’s top and then used a normal map instead my intention just to texture them in I decided that It wouldn’t be and effective use of my time to implement this.

The criteria of proposing, contextual perspective, research, problem solving, planning and organization Were effectively Evidenced In My Initial research/introduction stage Where I precisely and throughly Explain What im going to Create Why and how it relates to the Brief and how what I am going to create will help me achieve my targets and my thought process behind them. My storyboard/mind maps accompanied by my detailed notes I believe were extremely Effective in proposing my initial idea and  it Starts To incorporate the Contextual perspective where I start to explain what I  intend to create, Why and how it affects the contextual perspective for example when I explain why I want my character to be smoking as it helps to develop his character and how it has contextual links to the narrative I am trying to create with the Tropes around smoking and how it relates to the emotion im wanted to convey in my animation. it helped me to identify My proposed research topics. I identified existing media like Afro samurai and Kill bill that has elements in them that I would like use and take inspiration and influence from. also identifying new elements like to research like Particle effects and the Cloth modifier. this was also an Effective way to show  problem solving. as this stage identified a lot of initial problems I expected to face in terms of research and Development/production there was no Unexpected problems that arised that I havent already initially identified some of these issues that I initially identified being The workflow surrounding the creation of my 3 samurai meshes the Rigging and skinning surrounding my dragon wings for Example. For these initial problems I identified I had already suggested alternatives and ways to deal with these problems. Planning and organization by the Detailed Time schedule I produced Which at the time of creation was Realistic and achievable it sets out the time required and what I hope to achieve in that time, which was reviewed by my tutor and we both agreed that what i had set out was Realistic and achievable. and looking back at it now Disregarding the unexpected time delays that I did not account for from the university process and the need to spend extra time to revise maths I can still say that the time plan I produced was Realistic and achievable taking into account the actual delays I faced which I had accounted for in my initial plan.

The first week of the Project Was definitely the most successful in terms of direction motivation and quantity of work I produced and this is evident by my Weekly Review by the amount of work I produced in this week as I had Produced a thorough and detailed plan of what im going to do my goals and targets and how im going to achieve it and completed a good bulk of my Proposed research on Afro samurai and 1/3rd of kill Bill which I had identified would be the most time consuming parts of my research stage and is a prime example of this increased focus and motivation and passion I had for  this project and the course in general discussed in my initial research/introduction wich was one of the reasons why I chose to take on such a large and ambitious Project. then the next three weeks after that were bad and this is when my project suffered the first major setback over the rest of my research stage which was only supposed to be another week was then spread out over these 3 weeks which was dominated by my time commitment to the university application process meaning that my research stage suffered. in terms of the research  I produced as I discuss in my research evaluation stage that it was effective as it was appropriate relevent to the project. Effective enough due to the time constraints to progress to the next stage which was the Samurai Development. another good example of my planning and organization which I explain in the first paragraph of my “secondary”research stage was my decision to leave the main research of the technical aspects to when I needed to use them as it would be a better effective use of my time because by the time it came to use them a month plus would have passed and it wouldn’t be fresh in my memory anymore. which is good seeing how I didn’t manage to implement all of the more technical aspects of the projects and would have been a waste of time had I continued to keep going in my research stage. Idealy for this research stage all of it would have been produced to the same standard of my initial research/introduction and the amount of research I produced for afro samurai. My research had a great influence on my Development stage and it think it shows a clear progression from initial idea to research to developed product in some cases like my Animatic and the production of my characters but due to the time constraints alot my research did not end up getting utilised which is a shame.

The Development/Production stage I believe was the strongest stage of the project Despite its set backs that it incurred as a result of the delays encounter in the research stage and the Second major delay which was the need to forces more of my time away from the project to focus on maths revision. The Reason I Believe this is the Strongest Stage is Because It’s where  show my strongest practical, technical abilities during my time on the course which is my 3D modeling abilities. this a Stage has strong evidence of the practical, technical and practical uses of my problem solving abilities. The modeling of the characters is Solid the characters form and proportions are good apart from some small aspects that I mention in my Development/production Evaluation stage I achieved a good form and proportion whilst still keeping the Topology Clean as it is all quads there is no tris or n-gons the Topology is suitable and catered to the Correct deformations for the animation. I show Clear evidence of solving practical and technical problems, for example when I trouble shoot the issues i was having with the upnodes of the Facial rigg that was causing bones to rotate and give undesired effects, and when I determined what the best workflow would be concerning the need for having 3 rigs for the samurai. discovering ways to make my workflow more effective by experimenting with skinwrap and copying modifiers. The implementation of the Facial Rigg on my samurai was an Effective example of Planning and organization realising a project practical, technical, as I had initially Started the development of a Facial rigg before the FMP began in my contextual unit as a proof of concept in preparation for FMP to see if it was feasible to implement and get an idea on how long it would take to implement. The facial rigg was all independently researched and implemented by myself it’s not some thing that was taught on the course. A Facial rig is quite difficult in terms of technicality as you need to create a special rigg for the face  that mimics muscle structure with the use of stretch bones and then getting the weighting right for the facial rig is quite important as well particularly around the mouth as there is a lot of bones in a dense area where multiple verts are affected by different  bones.

The Final pieces are Effective but nowhere near as successful as I would have liked due to the time constraints I faced on the project. they are Basic but effectively showcase the work that I did manage to produce. The Animatic I produced Was Good. its basic I didn’t get to implement the sound and audio techniques identified in initial concept and research due to the time constraints I wasnt able to have the post production stages of lighting rendering and editing. instead i just use a japanese jazz soundtrack its appropriate and fits with the theme but not where near as good as what my proposed audio.but It still shows a Clear influence From my research Particularly the Cinematography as inspired by my analysis of Afro and Samurai and kill bill. my choice of Shot types and the composition were heavily inspired by afro samurai with its mix of varying shot types the extreme close-ups on important visual parts of and keeps the scene interesting. The Actual animation in the Animatic is also very good its smooth. They could be improved tho I didn’t use enough secondary motion in some of the shots for example in the Second shot when he pulls his cigaret away from his mouth it just stop and for the next second or untill the next shot its motionless and this would have just made the whole animation more interesting and more belive able. The timing of the animation at some points are off generally its a little to slow. The Dragon 360 Animation is Good it’s an Animation cycle of the dragon hovering. this is probably the most interesting animation I produced Helped by how visually impressive the dragon is when its animated it looks really good and is probably the part of the whole project im most proud of. This animation could have been improved though over all the primary animation of the wings flapping is good my main concerns with it is the timing I feel that they are slightly to slow when the wings flap down it’s not as impactful as if it’s getting a lot of lift to keep it hovering. the secondary motions of the animation are quite good but I think I was prehaps to subtle with some of them. in particularly the animation of the legs. initially the leg animation was quite pronounced they shifted up and down and move inwards a bit. this was the first iteration of the animation I done with them but when watching it the viewport it looked way to exaggerated so I made them more subtle to what they are now in the video in the view port in a front view it looks a lot better but due to the 360 rotation of the video its hard to see this and the movement is so subtle its easy to miss I havent accounted for this when i decided to make a 360 render but I should have probably stuck with the more exaggerated movements of the firs iteration of animation. the second issues I have with the animation of the dragon is the Shifting of weight and this was difficult as where i want to shift the weight in the hips to match the lift of the wings the control of the hips is the root control for the dragon so when you move that controller its moves the whole dragon and the way that I had animated it I started with the wings to get the flapping motion then started on the secondary motions of the chest and feet. by the time I got to the point where I noticed the weight shifting is not as good as I would like it was too late to go back and changing it due to the time constraints as if I manipulated the root control all the other animations would now be out-of-place and it would have required a lot of time to go back and adjust the position of all the controllers to account for the new animations on the root control.

In Conclusion, overall im Not Happy with the Progress of this project. although I do believe that the project was successful in that it meets the Core requirements of the brief Despite its major set backs. as it does show and effective Demonstration of my abilities that I have acquired over the course of the 2 years  spent Learning 3D Animation Particularly my 3D Modeling Abilities the Technical aspects such as Skinning and rigging with the implementation of advanced techniques like Facial rigging and the Animation Aspects. it’s just not up to my personal Quality and Standards  I would have liked to have achieved and expected of my self for a FMP but I feel the Project is as successful as it could have possibly have been due to the unforseen circumstances. objectively thinking about it There are not a lot of things I would have Changed About this Project I Still stand by my Initial prospects for this project it was a Well thought out Realistic and Achievable Project that I would have been proud of and was agreed upon by myself and my tutor as he identified it had the potential to be a candidate for student of the year award. It was just not executed and this is due to the unfortunate time Delays I had encountered. knowing what I know now And if some one told me you will have 3 less weeks to complete this project whilst studying Gcse maths along side it I would not have picked such and ambitious project. The Virtual insanity Project I had Created as part of my Conceptual Unit was one of my Initial Idea concepts and a candidate for my FMP that I had come up with close to the start of the Year. that project would have been more suitable as its concept was so simple just to recreate the music video to Virtual insanity it wouldnt of required a lot of work I would have only needed to Create one Character the enviroment is small and enclosed with simple shapes and colours it wouldnt of need to require as much research but it was an effective idea as evidence from the test animation I had created. I believe my Time was not used as effectively as it possible could have been. the effectiveness of my time was Sporadic at points in the project it was being effectively used to its full potential like the First Week of the Project its clear by the amount of work I produced , samurai development and The Dragon Development the only point in time after the initial set backs that i manged to gain some time back and this is due to the initial enthusiasm and momentum I had for the project and during the Development stages I genuinely enjoy the Development and its a pleasure to do instead of a chore back and other times not Effective at all like during my blog updates and when I had to complete other projects other than my FMP as referenced in my initial research/introduction stage I detest the need to document my research etc. as its so time consuming especially for me due to my dyslexia it takes me a longer time to produce my written work so it becomes more of a chore and the  Time Delays that occurred and its effect that it had on my motivation for this project, the more it became apparent that I wont be able to achieve the Fmp to the standards and Quality that I would like the less motivated I become to complete the project slowing down the effectiveness of the use of my time. this is Similar to the Issues I had on my last Fmp with my motivation and sporadic workflow, which I did identify as a potential problem in my initial research/introduction stage in my review of progress but thought I had already dealt this problem as evidenced by my enthusiasm and motivation I had displayed on all the time prior to the FMP which was also my reasoning and evidence behind why I had picked such an ambitious project. my work on this project compared to my previous assignments wasnt too different from what I had Been producing, Apart from the obvious amount of effort I put into my research stage as on my assignments I would ignore/neglect the research stage because I could get away with it  and allowed me to focus more on the development stages of my assignments. in terms of the Development Stages and my final models etc. there is a noticeable level of improvement in the quality of the models I produced and Animation but it is not a crazy massive improvement, its inline with the amount General improvement of my 3D abilities I have seen after each assignment. Which is consistent with the level of effort I put into my Development work that I have shown over my duration of the course. its hard to make an accurate comparison between my work compared to my peers. I didn’t follow their individual projects closely at all I don’t have the perspective to accurately judge their whole work and how well it worked for them. from what I have seen it’s still the same assessment from my initial peer review where my Development work the level of modeling rigging and skinning etc, is more advanced than my peers. my peers projects were very diverse only one other project was similar to my own which was carricks which I can closely compare my own too. His final piece is very Good its presented a lot better than mine as mine is unfinnished.there isnt much I can compare as its Clearly a finished product unlike mine and has other elements that I can’t really comment or compare to my own work as they were not included in my final pieces. I don’t particularly like the narrative of the Animation the audio is quite bad the voices are hard to hear at some points so its hard to get a grasp of whats going on. I don’t like the aesthetic that’s just a personal bias as I don’t like the use of standard materials and textures as they don’t match and it’s not visually appealing to me. but you can tell that a lot of effort and time went into it that I can respect. In terms of Character design and Production my Characters are better, visual his characters are simple they use a lot of basic shapes. The rigg used to animate his characters seem’s quite simple there doesn’t seem to be a shoulder bone so all the arm movement seems to just pivot from the one position limiting the range of motion, the weighting in the area of the shoulders is very stiff it doesn’t blend from the arm into the shoulder. when he makes upwards motions with the arms the deformations are quite bad it’s not as noticeable with his textures that he uses as its uniform and its blends into its self  but it is noticeable that the mesh starts to twist and deform quite badly. it also suggest that his topology isnt as efficient as it could be for Animation deformations. where as for my characters I put a lot more emphasise on the detail and form of the character. and the rigging and skinning and how suitable the topology is for animation. the I Feel that my Animation was Better than his as mine showed more of an under standing of animation Elements, but it’s quite hard to compare as we had different goals when animating his Animation was more action focused, fast movements. mine was more slow-paced and the animation was subtle  with less of a big range of movements. for as Action focused as it was a lot of the animations lacked a lot of weight behind them moments that stand out is when the Blue character gets up and jumps of the plat form these is no build up behind the jump and when he lands there is no reaction or follow through movement of the character. another moment is when the green character grapple hooks a Character and “slam’s” him into the window knocking him out it’s just so weak with no weight or force behind it. A lot of the pacing is off in General a lot of the animation movements are quite jerky and too fast.
